About this activity
Experience the famous Rainbow Mountain in a different, much faster way: by quad bike. This full-day tour takes you to Vinicunca, above 5,000 meters in elevation, covering most of the route on an ATV instead of hiking for hours.
It’s the ideal choice for travelers who want to see the iconic natural color stripes of this mountain up close, but have limited time, prefer a more active on-wheels adventure, or simply want to cut down on the physical effort of the traditional hike without missing the scenery. Once you get close to the viewpoint, a short final stretch is completed on foot to reach the best vantage point.
If you’d rather hike the full route, check out our full-day Rainbow Mountain hiking tour.
Itinerary
Day 01
Cusco – Pitumarca/Cusipata – Vinicunca by Quad Bike – Cusco
Cusco – Pitumarca/Cusipata – Vinicunca by Quad Bike – Cusco
The tour begins between 3:30 and 4:00 AM with hotel pickup in Cusco. From there, travelers depart by private vehicle toward the Pitumarca or Cusipata area, depending on the route scheduled for the excursion.
Between 6:00 and 6:30 AM, the group arrives at the quad bike base. Breakfast is provided, followed by a safety briefing and riding instructions to ensure everyone understands how to operate the ATV before starting the adventure.
From 6:30 to 9:30 AM, the quad bike ride begins along rural roads and mountain trails. During the journey, travelers cross impressive Andean landscapes while gradually approaching the Vinicunca area.
Between 9:30 and 10:30 AM, the final section is completed on foot to reach the main viewpoint of Rainbow Mountain. The walk takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes, depending on each traveler's pace and trail conditions. The viewpoint is located at around 5,036 meters / 16,522 feet above sea level, where there is free time to take photos and enjoy the scenery.
From approximately 10:30 AM, the group walks back down to the quad bike point. The return journey then continues by ATV to the base, with arrival expected at around 1:00 PM.
Between 1:00 and 2:00 PM, there is a break for lunch, according to the services confirmed in the booked package.
Finally, at around 2:00 PM, the return trip to Cusco begins by private vehicle. Arrival in the city is expected at approximately 5:30 PM, marking the end of the tour.

Recommendations
- Difficulty: low to moderate thanks to the ATV, though the final walking stretch takes place at very high altitude (above 5,000 m), so proper acclimatization beforehand matters.
- We recommend spending at least 2 days in Cusco before the tour to acclimatize to the altitude.
- Pack warm clothing in layers — temperatures around Vinicunca can be extremely cold even under full sun.
- Essentials: sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and gloves (wind chill while riding the quad bike can feel cold).
- Wear closed, comfortable shoes for the final walking stretch.
- Not recommended for people with heart conditions, pregnant travelers, or those with confirmed severe altitude sickness.
- Bring cash in Peruvian soles for personal expenses and tips.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need previous experience to ride the quad bike?
No prior experience is required. A safety and riding-instruction briefing is given before the ride begins, and the route is completed at a controlled, guided pace.
How much walking is involved compared to the traditional version?
Walking is significantly reduced: you only hike the final stretch up to the main viewpoint, while most of the route is covered by quad bike.
Is this suitable for people who aren't in great physical shape?
Yes, it's a more accessible option than the full traditional hike, though it's still recommended to be acclimatized to the altitude beforehand.
Is this the same as the walking Rainbow Mountain tour?
No. It's a different product: same destination (Vinicunca), but a different format that uses quad bikes to cover most of the route instead of hiking the whole way. If you prefer the hiking version, see our Rainbow Mountain full-day tour.
What's the minimum age required to ride the quad bike?
Tours like this typically set a minimum age requirement and, in some cases, offer the option to ride as a passenger if you'd rather not drive. Check with our team when booking.
